Celebrities are only human, and all those long hours, tiresome interviews and persistent paparazzi can undoubtedly take a toll. But there are some famous stars who handle the pressure a lot less gracefully than others. These 50 much-loved celebs, for example, have all played the innocent while secretly behaving badly. Indeed, they have variously been alleged, when the cameras were off, to throw red-carpet rages, fight with cast members and even lash out at fans.

51. Tobey Maguire
It seems that Spider-Man superhero Tobey Maguire is a super jerk in real life. In fact, he has been known to lash out at paparazzi, refuse to sign autographs and allegedly make ludicrous on-set coffee demands. One Hollywood poker hostess even claimed that the high-stakes player once demanded that she “bark like a seal” for a chip.
50. Lea Michele
In addition to apparently having rubbed her Glee co-stars up the wrong way with her prima donna antics, Lea Michele once reduced Hailee Steinfeld to tears when she denied the young True Grit star an autograph. In 2011 the actress was also spotted reportedly ridiculing an innocent festival-goer at Coachella. Yikes.
49. Julia Roberts
There were reports that “America’s Sweetheart” Julia Roberts behaved so insufferably on the set of Hook that she was dubbed “Tinkerhell” by the crew. She also left the Shakespeare in Love team high and dry after she pulled out of the movie in 1992 – and that’s not even to mention her 2012 pre-show Oscars huff when she refused to stick to the script.

48. Katherine Heigl
It seems as if nobody bites the hand that feeds harder than Katherine Heigl. The former Grey’s Anatomy star publicly badmouthed the show in 2008, claiming that its writing wasn’t good enough for her to receive an Emmy nomination, and declared her 2007 movie Knocked Up “a little sexist.” Insider reports have also alleged that the actress is difficult to work with and comes with an overbearing momager.
47. Zach Braff
Zach Braff’s reaction to a 2005 Punk’d prank was apparently so violent that it had to be edited out of the show. The actor also reportedly hates sharing the screen with good-looking men, and, despite allegedly earning around $350,000 per Scrubs episode, he used an online appeal to fund his 2014 movie Wish I Was Here.

46. Teri Hatcher
By all accounts, Teri Hatcher wasn’t very neighborly on Wisteria Lane: her Desperate Housewives co-star Eva Longoria called her a “loner” during filming, while Nicollette Sheridan reportedly said that she was the “meanest woman in the world.” What’s more, when the actress’ 2009 Tonight Show appearance was rescheduled to accommodate President Obama, the diva allegedly insisted on getting a Louis Vuitton purse as recompense.
45. Reese Witherspoon
Reese Witherspoon showed her dark side in 2013 when her husband Jim Toth was arrested for driving under the influence. The actress didn’t hesitate to play the fame card with the arresting officer, yelling, “Do you know my name?” and behaving so rudely that she got herself taken in for disorderly conduct.

44. Michael Jordan
Michael Jordan is, it seems, a bit of a bad sport. Over the years he’s variously punched former Chicago Bulls teammate Steve Kerr, reportedly made Kwame Brown cry and been allegedly so hyper-competitive that he even tried to cheat an old lady at cards. Then there was his legendary Basketball Hall of Fame revenge speech in 2009, during which he lambasted every enemy he’s ever had. Ouch.

43. Edward Norton
It’s fair to say that Edward Norton doesn’t like taking orders, particularly as he has clashed with directors on the sets of movies including American History X, Red Dragon and, most recently, Marvel’s The Incredible Hulk. Indeed, Norton was dropped from his role as Bruce Banner for The Avengers, and Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige notably denounced the actor as lacking in team spirit.
42. Christina Aguilera
Christina Aguilera’s Mouseketeer training went straight out the window in December 2014 after she reportedly called Mickey Mouse an “*sshole” during an altercation at Disneyland. The Voice judge was celebrating her birthday at the Californian theme park when Mickey had the audacity to make the pop diva wait for a photograph – and, of course, she couldn’t let it lie.

41. Danny Glover
In 2007 a then 60-year-old Danny Glover proved that he was still quite the lethal weapon when he punched a New York Daily News photographer in the face. Then a few years later, in May 2015, Glover also lost his temper with a KTVU news anchor who cut his airtime short, complaining, “I’m not somebody who’s moved to the wayside.”
40. Sharon Stone
Italian director duo Pupi and Antonio Avati weren’t shy about calling Sharon Stone out for her diva antics on the set of 2014 movie Golden Boy. The brothers claimed that the Basic Instinct star made ridiculous contractual demands and became increasingly difficult during filming, at one point going MIA and even abusing the production credit card.
39. Jared Leto
Kooky Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto apparently likes to give back to his fans – after all, he has been seen bashing one on the head with his mic and flipping the bird to another. Plus, the Oscar-winning actor recently gifted a Suicide Squad co-star with an actual rat – and is rumored to have some equally creepy flirtation techniques when it comes to picking up the ladies.
Image: Ilya S. Savenok/Getty Images
Queen B certainly acted like royalty on her 2013-14 Mrs. Carter tour, curtailing press photography and reportedly dictating every last detail down to the color of the toilet paper. And when it came to the London leg at the O2 arena, Beyoncé eschewed the venue’s usual dressing rooms, instead helping herself to a huge suite that’s normally reserved for whole sports teams.
37. Jennifer Aniston
Sadly, it seems as though Jennifer Aniston isn’t everyone’s friend. Reports from the set of her 2013 movie Life of Crime claimed that the actress refused to socialize with the rest of the cast and chose to eat her meals alone. Aniston also has a bit of a temper – if her admission that she once “threw a chair at a director” is anything to go by.
36. Hilary Duff
When Hilary Duff isn’t in the mood for signing autographs, she doesn’t make an exception for anybody – not even a nine-year-old girl. The singer and actress was apparently too busy to write her name on a menu at a family dinner in 2007, reducing one excited young fan to tears.
35. Mike Myers
Mike Myers proved that he had a little Dr. Evil in him when he allegedly lost it at an Austin Powers crewmember for looking him in the eye. What’s more, the comedian didn’t help his reputation as a sulky perfectionist by reportedly hiring assistants to shade him from the sun while filming his 2008 flop The Love Guru.
34. Rachael Ray
Are you a fan of the Rachael Ray Show? Well, according to a “celebrity tour guide” called Jim Dykes, you might want to think twice about going to any future tapings. He said, “Her staff and the treatment of her studio audience was the worst I’ve ever experienced.” And we can’t forget the nasty remarks Ray has allegedly made about Brad Pitt, Oprah Winfrey and Angelina Jolie in the past. Oof!
33. Gwyneth Paltrow
As well as introducing the phrase “conscious uncoupling” into the popular lexicon, Gwyneth Paltrow has committed a string of other equally noxious acts. Indeed, it’s said that the actress won’t use a gym shower or a toilet roll that’s so much as been touched by another person. It’s also rumored that she refused to speak to co-star Scarlett Johansson while the pair were filming Iron Man 2.

32. Jonah Hill
Jonah Hill is another on-screen funnyman who takes himself a bit too seriously off-camera. It’s perhaps no wonder, then, that Knocked Up director Judd Apatow once described the actor as an “angry nerd,” with Hill’s crimes having included yelling a homophobic insult at a paparazzo and giving a notoriously obnoxious Rolling Stone interview.
30. Sandra Bullock
Sandra Bullock may have made a mint playing everyone’s favorite girl-next-door on the big screen, but it seems as if she’s anything but easygoing behind the scenes. And she even admits it, too. “I’m controlling,” Bullock told Parade in 2009. “I’m difficult on every single level. I’m aware that I can be annoying.”
29. Shannen Doherty
Shannen Doherty and Alyssa Milano were sisters in arms on the hit supernatural drama Charmed; the two perhaps weren’t so pally off screen, however. On a 2013 edition of Watch What Happens Live, in fact, Milano revealed that there “were definitely some rough days” while working with Doherty. And she’s not the only ex-colleague to have said so, either. Yes, in his 2014 memoir, Doherty’s Beverly Hills, 90210 co-star Jason Priestley also accused the actress of being somewhat difficult to work with.
28. Val Kilmer
Val Kilmer has been playing the bad boy both on and off set for decades. The Batman Forever star – who’s earned himself the nickname “Psycho Kilmer” in the industry – has ruffled the feathers of quite a few filmmakers, including Richard Stanley, John Frankenheimer and Keven Jarre. Batman director Joel Schumacher, meanwhile, has dubbed Kilmer “the most psychologically disturbed human being [he’s] ever worked with.” Ouch.
27. Bruce Willis
In a 2011 interview with Marc Maron, Cop Out director Kevin Smith came right out and said that working with Bruce Willis had been “soul crushing.” Apparently, the veteran actor had been completely uncooperative and had even refused to pose for promotional photos. And Smith wasn’t the first to clash with Willis. Tears of the Sun director Antoine Fuqua described him as having been a “pain in the ass” during filming of the 2003 drama, while relations were also rumored to have been frosty between Willis and his Moonlighting co-star Cybill Shepherd.
26. William Shatner
It seems as though there’s no love lost between Captain Kirk and the rest of his Star Trek crew. Actor William Shatner continually clashed with co-stars George Takei and Leonard Nimoy, while it’s also been reported that his diva behavior almost pushed actress Nichelle Nichols to leave the show. Oh, and that he took lines penned for other castmembers for himself. What’s more, the veteran star even refused to attend a 2004 convention tribute to former colleague and dementia sufferer James Doohan. A rather unsympathetic Shatner allegedly said, “I really don’t want to deal with all this Alzheimer’s crap.”
25. Steven Seagal
He’s made a living out of his bulk and brawn, so it perhaps comes as little surprise that Steven Seagal rules by intimidation on set. David Spade, for instance, dubbed the action star “tough to work with,” adding that “he did not want to play along” on set as an SNL presenter in 1991. But more shocking are reports of him being physically abusive on a movie set. In particular, in 2011 John Leguizamo told Canadian radio show q that he was winded by Seagal when the Aikido black belt threw him against a brick wall – just to show him who was boss.
24. Tommy Lee Jones
It’s fair to say that Tommy Lee Jones has no great love for the press. Texas Monthly journalist Skip Hollandsworth found him an incredibly spiky interviewee, while the veteran actor once stormed out on The Telegraph’s Robbie Collin after the critic dared to dub Jones’ 2014 film The Huntsman a western. And Jones once delivered a priceless put-down to Jim Carrey, too, telling his Batman Forever co-star, “I hate you… I cannot sanction your buffoonery.”
Fun-loving pop star Rihanna may seem like an unlikely addition to this list, but she revealed a definite mean streak in 2014 when she ruthlessly mocked a young fan on Twitter. Alexis Carter had attempted to replicate Rihanna’s red carpet cape-like catsuit for her prom. However, when the singer caught wind of the pics, she posted a couple of cruel memes comparing the 16-year-old to a bat. A hurt Carter would later tell Fox Baltimore, “She doesn’t love her fans like she says she does.”
22. Ashlee Simpson
In 2009 Ashlee Simpson took a brief hiatus from singing to appear in the Melrose Place remake, but it appears she wasn’t the most popular new kid on the block. Indeed, the star was axed from the show just a year later, with reports suggesting that it wasn’t just her paper-thin performances which led to the decision. At the time, one insider told Fox News that Simpson had acted up on set – showing up late, criticizing her colleagues and generally grating on everyone’s nerves.
21. Cameron Diaz
Cameron Diaz is another actress who has fashioned a living out of playing the rom-com sweetheart. It’s suggested, though, that the There’s Something About Mary star isn’t quite as sweet to her fans. Diaz has developed a reputation for being notoriously ungracious to autograph hunters: not only does she refuse to pick up a pen and grant any signing requests, but she also reportedly berates peeps for even daring to ask. Yikes.
20. January Jones
January Jones may have played an anxious mom on Mad Men, but her on-screen son didn’t find the actress quite so concerned about others when the cameras were turned off. In fact, upon his departure from the show in 2011, Bobby actor Jared Gilmore told TV Guide, “She’s not as approachable as the others. She’s really serious about what she does. Everyone else is so nice.” Not even approachable to a child, then. And The Hangover’s Zach Galifianakis didn’t hit it off with the beauty, either. In an interview with Shortlist that same year, he revealed that the actress had once abruptly told him to leave her table while at a party.
19. Faye Dunaway
It’s a matter of opinion as to whether Bonnie and Clyde star Faye Dunaway is a diva or an eccentric, but practically everyone can agree that there’s something of a mean streak in the veteran actress. Reports of her being rude to air stewardesses and a reporter are on record, for example. And she once even lost her temper with a hotel employee after being booked into a room with disabled access, shouting at him, “Do I look handicapped to you?” Rumors persist that she flung urine on director Roman Polanski while on the set of Chinatown, too. Oh, and that’s not even mentioning the infamous egotistical rant that she dumped on the voicemail of one of the crew making a documentary about her.
18. Kiefer Sutherland
Kiefer Sutherland’s tough-talking ways have made him a mint as the star of 24, but it seems as if he just can’t leave the aggro behind on set. In 2009, for example, the actor hit headlines after he headbutted a fashion designer who had accidentally knocked into Brooke Shields. And four years previously, he took his anger out on another innocent victim when he bulldozed a Christmas tree. Former co-star Freddie Prinze Jr., meanwhile, told ABC News in 2014 that the actor was “the most unprofessional dude in the world.”
17. Mischa Barton
O.C. sweetheart Mischa Barton may have won the heart of co-star Cam Gigandet on screen, but the actor was definitely less enamored with her in real life. “Mischa? I didn’t really… Was she there?” he would go on to remark to Elle in 2014. And the reason for his indifference might lie in Barton’s on-set behavior, which apparently didn’t win her many fans. In fact, when asked about the show on a 2013 episode of Watch What Happens Live, Tate Donovan was quick to point the finger at Barton as the “biggest diva” of them all on the teen series.
16. Shenae Grimes
Shenae Grimes apparently behaved so badly during shoots of 90210 that she was touted as “Shannen Doherty 2.0.” Indeed, in 2008 Page Six reported that the pretty brunette was acting the diva on set, throwing her weight around and even telling cast members, “This is my show – everyone else is riding my coattails.” Yikes.
15. David O. Russell
The behind-the-scenes video clip of David O. Russell launching a foul-mouthed tirade at Lily Tomlin on the set of I Heart Huckabees is just as shocking to hear now as it was back in 2004. But it wasn’t the first or the last time that the director would lose it with one of his cast or others. Russell came to blows – quite literally – with George Clooney during filming for Three Kings, and he once had Christopher Nolan in a headlock over an argument about casting, too.
14. Wesley Snipes
Wesley Snipes is an anti-social stoner who once attempted to actually throttle his Blade: Trinity director David Goyer; that’s according to his co-star Patton Oswalt, anyway. In 2012 Oswalt told A.V. Club that the star of the show spent most of his time in his trailer, puffing on a joint. And let’s not forget that Snipes has a problem keeping his greed as well as his temper in check: in 2008 he was handed a three-year prison sentence for tax evasion, of which he served just under two and a half years.
13. Padma Lakshmi
If rumors are to be believed, model-turned-chef Padma Lakshmi could give hothead Gordon Ramsay a run for his money in the kitchen – in the rudeness stakes, at least. Uproxx reported in 2012 that the Indian-American beauty actually banned eye contact, as well as any mention of her famous ex-hubby Salman Rushdie, on the set of Top Chef. In fact, according to one source at a taping of the show, any talking to the diva-in-training was strictly verboten as well.
12. Lauryn Hill
As divas go, Lauryn Hill has to be up there with the worst of them. In 2012, for one, former bandmates Brandon Owens and Davin Givhan presented LA Weekly with a damning litany of demands that the Fugees member-turned-solo star had made of her staff and colleagues during tours. Apparently Hill treated her mom like a chauffeur, refused to lower herself to a handshake and has a tour wardrobe so big that she demands a whole hotel suite to house it. Indeed, her treatment of those around her was so abominable that another ex-band member, Jay Gore, actually launched a legal case against her in 2011.
11. Woody Harrelson
Back in 2012 Woody Harrelson went down in Reddit history with a notoriously awkward Ask Me Anything session. The True Detective star had only one thing on his mind during the Q&A: his then-new movie Rampart. But, understandably, his shameless self-promotion and blunt responses enraged his Reddit audience. And Harrelson didn’t stop there: he left the AMA and promptly delivered an equally unfavorable interview to Vice magazine, leaving the reporter to conclude that he was nothing but a “scumbag.”
10. Hugh Grant
Sure, Hugh Grant might be a jerk, but at least he knows it. Indeed, in 2012 the rom-com veteran took to Twitter to say sorry for being a total grump on The Daily Show back in 2009. “Turns out my inner crab got the better of me,” he tweeted.
9. Jay Z
Just like his bootylicious wife, Jay Z has also earned himself a place on this list with some pretty jerkish behavior. For example, during a 2014 Parisian trip the rapper’s ego took a bashing when another tourist had the nerve to ask who he was. An indignant Hova, meanwhile, brusquely responded, “Who are you?”
Usher might be a smooth operator behind the mic, but it seems that his dining etiquette leaves a lot to be desired. The Confessions soulster has been named and shamed on a number of “worst tippers” and “rude to waiters” lists, with reports suggesting that, despite his estimated $180 million net worth, he often leaves others to pick up the check.
7. John Mayer
In a 2013 Sunday Morning appearance, John Mayer confirmed what many already knew when he said, “I was a jerk.” After all, the singer has made a sling of derogatory kiss-and-tell remarks about his exes over the years. However, in an interview with Playboy in 2010, he outdid even his previous jerkiness with comments many considered not only misogynist, but also racist.
6. Alex Pettyfer
Alex Pettyfer’s pretty face won over a lot of fans when he first appeared on our screens as Alex Rider, but he didn’t look quite so good on paper when VMAN magazine published an interview with the star back in 2011. Pettyfer delivered some pretty unpopular opinions during the piece, declaring among them that LA is “an insidious pool” and that his thespian life there was “like being in prison.”
5. Anne Hathaway
Perhaps Anne Hathaway has learned more diva behavior from the Devil Wears Prada set than she likes to admit; that’s according to a 2008 report from OK!, at least. The magazine reported that Hathaway made press wait for 45 minutes while someone went twice around the block – first to fetch soy lattes for her and her crew, and then to bring back scrambled eggs.
4. Patrick Dempsey
In 2015 Grey’s Anatomy fans were devastated to learn that Patrick Dempsey wasn’t quite so McDreamy. Indeed, when he left the show that year under a cloud of speculation, the tabloid consensus was that he argued all the time and that the show’s producer, Shonda Rhimes, found him completely intolerable. But Dempsey wasn’t the only diva doctor on the set…
3. Isaiah Washington
Isaiah Washington, a.k.a. Dr. Preston Burke, also allegedly clashed with his Grey’s Anatomy co-stars. The breaking point, however, came in 2007 after reports of him using homophobic slurs went public. As a result, he was axed from the show; years later, however, he compounded his reputation as a bigot by declaring that a gay conspiracy had destroyed his career.
2. Will Ferrell
Funnyman Will Ferrell might crack all the best jokes on screen, but it appears as if he has a somewhat twisted sense of humor in real life. That’s because the Anchorman star reportedly likes to ridicule autograph hunters who dare to approach him for a signature. Not classy, Ferrell.
1. Jack Black
Jack Black is another comic actor who reportedly saves all the laughs for the camera. And British presenter Vernon Kay, for one, found nothing funny about his time with the School of Rock star. “I interviewed him three times and he was terrible each time. He was rude, sulky, obnoxious – everything you don’t want in an interviewee,” Kay divulged to Metro in 2008.
