After years as a rom-com queen, Julia Roberts finally found lasting love for herself with second husband Daniel Moder. And since the couple tied the knot in 2002, they’ve welcomed three children – although Hazel, Phinnaeus and Henry are usually kept out of the spotlight. But fans of the actress were in for a treat in 2019, when Moder decided to give the world a glimpse of his family. It’s safe to say, too, that the Roberts-Moders make for a very cute clan.
We’ll discover more about Moder’s post a little later, but first let’s learn a little more about his superstar wife. As many know, of course, Roberts rose from small-town life in Smyrna, Georgia, to become one of the best-known names of the ’90s. And at around the same time that she won her first Oscar in 2001, the actress was in a burgeoning relationship with the man who would become her spouse.
Then, just over a year after Roberts saw victory at the Academy Awards, she and Moder got married. The pair exchanged their vows in a ceremony held at Roberts’ estate in New Mexico in the summer of 2002. And in November 2004, their lives would change forever – and for the better.
Yes, it was during that month that Roberts and Moder became parents for the first time to twins Hazel and Phinnaeus. The couple’s third child, Henry, would then arrive three years later. And despite her status in Hollywood, Roberts has somehow managed to keep her personal affairs quite private. That means public snaps of her kids are few and far between.
But while Roberts may now be a married mom of three, her road to a happy family life wasn’t as straightforward as you may think. You see, the actress went through several high-profile relationships before being introduced to Moder nearly two decades ago.
Prior to settling down, Roberts dated similarly well-known men such as Kiefer Sutherland, Matthew Perry and Liam Neeson. Then, in 1993, the film star tied the knot for the first time with musician Lyle Lovett – although that marriage didn’t last long.
After less than two years together, in fact, Roberts and Lovett split up in the spring of 1995. But, of course, the actress didn’t completely throw in the towel when it came to love. And after another serious relationship with actor Benjamin Bratt, she finally encountered future husband Moder.
Back in 2000, Roberts was working alongside Brad Pitt on crime comedy The Mexican. And during her time on set, she was introduced to Moder, who was one of the film’s camera operators. At that point, the crew member had around five years’ worth of experience in Hollywood.
Naturally, Roberts and Moder would go on to hit it off – even though the pair were at very different stages in their respective careers. And during a 2003 conversation with Oprah Winfrey, Roberts opened up about how she and the cameraman had become close.
“On the set, I get pretty relaxed,” Roberts said. “[The crew] see me at five in the morning, when I come stumbling onto the set like, ‘What the hell is goin’ on?’ In those circumstances, you can see what a person’s really made of. Some great friendships can be formed because you see one another at your best and worst.”
In the end, Roberts and Moder finally became an item when the camera operator left his wife in 2002. Then, later that summer, the lovebirds got hitched on Independence Day. And according to the actress, wedding her second husband proved to be a real turning point in her life.
Roberts added to Oprah, “I think it’s not so much that I’m happier now than ever; it’s that I’m more content. I’m in the harbor of my life. A huge part of it is my marriage. My husband… has really shined the light for me.” And her thoughts didn’t end there.
“Because of being married, I’ve met people and experienced all these little things that have nurtured my life,” Roberts added. “Not so much changed it – just nurtured it in a way that’s astounding.” And even after more than a decade of marriage, the actress appeared to feel the same way.
Roberts sat down to talk with Harper’s Bazaar magazine in October 2017. And over the course of that conversation, the Academy Award winner made a rather candid confession when discussing her old attitude towards life. In her mind, Moder had played a massive role in changing her perspective.
Roberts said, “I was my priority – a selfish little brat running around making films. Meeting [Moder was the turning point]. Finding my person. When I think about what makes my life my life – and make sense and just shine inside of me – it’s him. Everything has come from that for me.”
And Roberts continued with her praise for Moder in yet another interview in 2019. That year, the star spoke to U.K. newspaper The Sun as she promoted her new movie Ben Is Back, with the conversation eventually turning to Roberts’ husband of nearly 17 years.
“Getting married to [Moder] is easily one of three turning points [in my life], because I found what for me is my perfect match,” Roberts explained to the paper. “That person shapes you, crystallizes the definition of who you are. I give [Moder] a lot of credit. He makes me feel my most comfortable self.”
Roberts added, “I don’t alter myself in any way. And [Moder] points out aspects of myself – good and bad – that maybe I don’t pay attention to.” But, of course, there was more than just the relationship between herself and Moder to consider at that point.
As we mentioned earlier, Roberts and Moder welcomed twins Phinnaeus and Hazel into the world in November 2004. And despite all of the work that comes with looking after two toddlers, the parents then had their third kid, Henry, in June 2007.
After that point, Roberts’ personal life seemingly became a lot more private, as she and Moder looked to raise their children out of the public eye. That said, the Hollywood superstar did talk about her approach to parenting when in conversation with The Sun. And according to her, she was cautious when it came to what her sons and daughter could access at home.
Roberts told the publication, “I have three young children, so I’m very careful about turning the TV on. It’s interesting trying to raise kids in this day because it’s all so new – the pressures, the resources, having the world in your hand like that. I try to keep them off social media, because I don’t really understand what they need that for right now.”
Roberts also revealed that both she and Moder have other rules that the kids need to follow at home. And even though she’s far from your average mom, the actress claimed that occasionally she has to lay down the law – just like any other parent.
“I’m a strict mom,” Roberts admitted. “I don’t really lose my temper, but I think it’s important that children know their boundaries. If something happens, I don’t really punish them; I prefer to have conversations with them. I think my serious face is punishment enough.”
Then Roberts touched upon her own youthful experiences, saying, “I don’t want [the kids] to have had some of the struggles I had as a child. But you do need to know how to make your bed, do your laundry and how to make a meal. These are important life skills. They have to run their own race.”
And Moder, too, has offered some insight into his family’s life. But unlike Roberts, he didn’t speak to the media. Instead, the cinematographer shared a simple photo of his clan as they celebrated Mother’s Day in the U.S. in May 2019.
In the picture, Roberts is sitting at a table and surrounded by her three children. Moder, on the other hand, is seen leaning into the frame from the side and snapping the selfie. And the dad went on to share this image on his Instagram page, adding a brief message alongside the photo that explained the scene.
Referring to Roberts’ position in the snap, Moder wrote, “That pretty mama in the middle. We love you so much.” And since being posted on social media, the image has earned in excess of 22,000 likes – with some fans also commenting on just how beautiful the family appeared.
Moder’s Instagram page hosts a few other images of his children as well. One photo captures young Henry looking out onto an empty beach while wearing his father’s old Malibu Mustangs football coat – much to the approval of Moder himself.
That snap was subsequently posted in January 2019 and earned over 1,600 likes on social media. And when Moder shared another photo – this time of Hazel – a few months later, it was similarly popular. In this particular shot, the teenager could be seen facing the camera as she grinned for a selfie in the sun.
In the accompanying message, Moder wrote, “So lucky this girl is my daughter… and that she takes these awesome selfies on my phone. Staying gnarly.” The post has since clocked up in excess of 2,800 likes, with Instagram users seemingly flocking to catch a glimpse of Roberts’ kid.
What’s more, the actress even created her own Instagram account in 2018. This was somewhat surprising at the time, given her previous aversion to social media. In fact, in 2013 the Oscar winner had seemingly sworn not to sign up to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and their ilk.
During an interview with Marie Claire magazine that year, Roberts had explained, “[Social media] is kind of like cotton candy. It looks so appealing, and you just can’t resist getting in there. And then you just end up with sticky fingers, and it lasted an instant.”
It seems, then, that Roberts changed her mind in the intervening years. And when she finally debuted on Instagram in June 2018, her first post went on to earn more than 400,000 likes. As of May 2020, the page itself also has over eight million followers.
Roberts even touched on her foray into social media when talking to Extra in September 2018. And when she relayed an anecdote about a particular post that she had made, she couldn’t help but highlight her bond with Moder once again.
Roberts said, “Well, you know what? [Moder is] an awesome human being. We have so much fun. I said to him – we were lying in bed – I go to him, ‘Can I post this picture?’ ’Cause that’s a weird question [for me]. New to my lexicon. And he was like, ‘Okay.’”
Roberts maintained this newfound openness during her interview with The Sun, too. And after shedding plenty of light on her parenting techniques at home, she revealed just how vital family time was for her, Moder and their three children.
“It’s about allowing time to just exist,” Roberts explained to the newspaper in March 2019. “Conversations require a complete disregard for the clock so that you can just listen and really be present. Wanting to keep our family intact is something my husband and I… it’s always been a priority.”
And Roberts concluded the interview by making a final point about her relationship with Moder. She said, “For two people in show business, it’s amazing. We’ve only worked at the same time, separately, once. I’m so proud of my marriage. We celebrated being married for 16 years in July, and there’s so much happiness wrapped up in what we’ve found together.”
That’s all despite the fact that Roberts and Moder have both had a busy couple of years. As a director of photography, Moder worked on all ten episodes of the television series Dead to Me, which hit Netflix in 2019. He also served as a cinematographer on the upcoming Sean Penn-directed movie Flag Day.
Meanwhile, Roberts herself appeared on the small screen in Amazon Prime’s 2018 series Homecoming – a second season of which will debut in May 2020. And fans can also catch the actress in forthcoming Watergate-themed show Gaslit, which will see the Pretty Woman star depict the divisive Martha Mitchell.
