Hollywood marriages are famously short, but Hollywood romances? They can definitely go the distance. Just ask Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, who have been loved up for more than three decades now. But despite their longstanding commitment to each other, the two have never tied the knot. Why is that? Well, Hawn has revealed the truth – and explained why her fans won’t be hearing wedding bells anytime soon.
Mind you, Hawn’s given revealing interviews for years now. We know a lot about the bubbly blonde star, in fact! There are her showbiz roots, for instance. Her mom worked as an actress and her father as a musician, meaning that Hawn herself had many inroads to success. But her first love wasn’t acting, but dance. At just three years old, she started learning ballet and tap. And before she even left her teens, she was running her own ballet school.
As for Hawn’s beloved Russell? Well, he was making his own strides in showbiz. He’d started off young, too, as an actor. And he earned quite the legendary fan in Walt Disney. Russell impressed Disney so much, it’s said, that his name became the last words the icon ever wrote – on a scribbled note on his desk.
In any case, as the years went by, both Hawn and Russell’s careers took flight. Hawn won acclaim for her ditzy but adorable characters in movies such as 1980’s iconic Private Benjamin. Russell, on the other hand, managed to shake off his child-star status after director John Carpenter intervened. Playing R.J. MacReady in The Thing wasn’t exactly something that could be done by a kid, after all!
But while the two were lucky in life, they weren’t so lucky in love. After divorcing first husband Gus Trikonis in 1974, Hawn tied the knot with actor and musician Bill Hudson that same year. Hawn and Hudson then welcomed children Kate – who’s now a Hollywood star in her own right – and Oliver. Sadly, though, their marriage was relatively short-lived. It fell apart in 1980.
Russell likewise had his share of broken relationships. He was married, sure, but he and wife Season Hubley would ultimately divorce in 1983. But romance was just around the corner. That year, a little film called Swing Shift would see Russell fall for the woman who would become his long-time companion.
You may not have seen – or even heard of – Swing Shift, but you should definitely know about it. You see, Hawn and Russell began their relationship on the set of that film. After he was blown away by his co-star, Russell took the plunge and made his feelings clear. And luckily for him, it wasn’t a swing and a miss! The actress was similarly smitten, and so the pair’s romance took off.
“[Russell] was so good-looking, but he had no pretense about him,” Hawn told People in 2017. “I could tell right away he wasn’t a womanizer. [But] what really got me was when I watched my kids when they’d come to the set and how he was with them… He was a natural.” Aww.
Weirdly, though, this wasn’t actually the first time that the stars’ paths had crossed. Hawn had first met Russell while appearing in the 1968 musical The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band. That had been her first ever screen role. But it would take time before she could see the five-year age gap between them as less of an issue.
Still, good things come to those who wait! Following their first date, both Hawn and Russell instantly knew that they’d found the love of their life. And the stars weren’t the only ones over the moon about their new relationship. Proving Hawn’s initial instincts right, Kate and Oliver took to Russell like another dad.
Even now, Kate speaks warmly of her de facto stepfather. “The trust I got from [Russell] in terms of his dependability was priceless for me,” she admitted on The Howard Stern Show in 2016. “He is so honest, so brutally honest. I love him so much. He is just a great guy.”
So, Russell, Hawn, Kate, Oliver and Russell’s son Boston all became a happy blended family. There was a new addition, too, when the Hollywood stars welcomed their own child, Wyatt, in 1986. But while you may assume the next step would be getting married, Hawn and Russell have never actually ventured down the aisle together.
Still, just like most married couples, Hawn and Russell have had their fair share of hardships. In particular, Bill Hudson has accused the pair of estranging him from his children. “Goldie wanted to create this myth of a perfect family with Kurt, and she wanted me out,” he told The Mail on Sunday in 2015.
Hawn and Russell have also had to face the pull of temptation from time to time. “Monogamy is a very tough order,” Hawn explained to People in 2017. “You’re in the prime of your life, you are attracted to other people. Potentially, you have fantasies about that. It really runs the risk… if you’re not aware that you could screw up a really good thing by doing that.”
Though declining to give any specific examples, Hawn suggested that eyes may have wandered – but that no cheating has gone on. She added, “I’m sure I’ve been party to it, and Kurt’s been – we’re all normal this way… There is, I guess, an elasticity to the relationship. Otherwise, it’s going to break.”
Through it all, though, Hawn and Russell have stayed together. And yet their refusal to take vows has led to much speculation. “Nothing can be better than what we have,” Hawn gushed to Entertainment Tonight in 1997. “But somehow, marriage means a lot to people, so yeah, I give that to them.”
And the couple’s refusal to get hitched may actually have helped keep their relationship afloat. During a 2016 appearance on U.K. chat show Loose Women, Hawn confessed that marriage would have torn her and Russell apart. “I would have been long divorced if I’d been married,” she said.
Seemingly influenced by her past experience with matrimony, Hawn went on, “If you need to feel bound to someone, then it’s important to be married. If you have enough money and enough sense of independence… [then] there’s something psychological about not being married.”
“For me, I chose to stay, [and] Kurt chose to stay, and we like the choice,” the actress concluded. The best bit? Hawn and Russell’s children are also in agreement – and they made their stance on marriage quite clear early on. “It was perfect the way it was,” Hawn enthused.
It seems that Hawn and Russell have made up their minds, then! And, surprisingly, they don’t find the constant needling about marriage to be a pain in the butt. “Everyone always asks the same question,” Hawn told Entertainment Tonight in 2017. “We are kind of having fun with it.” That’s just as well, as matrimony wouldn’t make this couple’s perfect pairing any more adorable.
Hawn and Russell aren’t the only Hollywood couple who’ve had to put up with fans scrutinizing their relationship. Rumors have been swirling about Nicole Kidman’s marriage to Keith Urban for a while now. And the couple were seemingly left with no choice other than to set the record straight on their supposedly turbulent match.
They are two disparate people – he a country singer, she a Hollywood actress – but Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman seem to go together like a horse and carriage. Yet despite the fact that Urban and Kidman have been married for over ten years, rumors still persist about the health of their relationship. It was highlighted again at 2017’s Emmy Awards when many claimed Urban was annoyed by his spouse kissing her co-star. But now the couple have made a momentous decision, one that should put to rest any whispers and speculation. And it may just take you by surprise…
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban first met in 2005 at the G’Day USA gala. It proved to be love at first sight – for Kidman at least. She said on Ellen in 2013, “I’m like, ‘You didn’t love me at first sight, you didn’t notice me,’ and he’s like, ‘Yes I did, but I just didn’t let on.’ But we kind of met and then about four months later he called me.”
And the call from Urban certainly went well, as the pair quickly become infatuated with each other. So much so, in fact, that they got engaged in the spring of 2006. After just a short time knowing each other, then, Kidman and Urban were getting ready for their big day.
Speaking to Elle in 2014, Kidman reminisced on the speedy engagement. She said, “I kind of like getting married and then getting to know each other; I know that it sounds incredibly strange, but to me, it’s a more natural process.”
So on June 25, 2006, the couple said their vows and got married. The ceremony took place in Kidman’s adopted homeland of Sydney, Australia, and featured many celebrity figures at the wedding. Among them were the likes of Naomi Watts, Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe.
However, shortly after the big occasion, Urban went through some personal trials. Indeed, in October of that same year, he checked himself into the Betty Ford Center to tackle his alcohol abuse problems. He had previously entered treatment for a cocaine problem in 1998.
Devoted to her new husband, then, Kidman flew back from a promotional trip to offer Urban her full support. However, Urban said his demons weren’t easy to overcome. Speaking of his problems with alcohol, he told People magazine in 2007, “I was going to lose it all.”
He continued, “You can choose life or you can go the other way… It’s not a matter of all the intricate stuff in between. It’s just life or no life.” He also spoke about how difficult it was for his spouse, saying, “It was very, very hard to have to have her go through that.” Ninety days after first arriving, Urban checked out of the rehab facility.
On the road to recovery, Urban began to concentrate on family matters with Kidman. And on July 2008, the couple had a baby. Yes, the two lovebirds brought their first child together – a girl named Sunday Rose Kidman Urban – into the world.
Then in 2010, they brought another addition into the family via a surrogate: Faith Margaret Kidman Urban. And perhaps Kidman’s not done just yet when it comes to children. The star told Elle in 2014, “My grandmother had her last at 49. Every month, I’m like, ‘I hope I’m pregnant!’”
So after all of the ups and downs that have transpired during their ten-plus years together, rumors still abound about the state of their marriage. Indeed, the gossiping began again earlier in 2017 after Kidman gave her Big Little Lies co-star Alexander Skarsgård a kiss on the lips at the Emmy Awards.
Some have speculated that her actions have caused a rift in the relationship, with one source coming forward to speak about Urban’s displeasure regarding the smooch. The person even told Woman’s Day that he felt she was “disrespecting and humiliating him.”
However, Kidman later addressed the kiss when she appeared on The Graham Norton Show. She told the chat show host, “I’ve got an amazing, supportive, gorgeous husband who I love more than anything in the world, and I gave Alex a congratulatory kiss, and he’s like a mannequin.”
And now, in a new twist to events, it seems that the two celebrities are ready to renew their marriage vows. The revelation comes by way of In Touch, which claims the pair are preparing to say their “I do’s” one more time.
It’s certainly a big decision for the glamorous couple to make, but it’s one which an insider claims is vital for the both of them. The source told In Touch that Urban “has realized that he can’t live without Nicole and has asked her to renew their vows. Nicole thinks it’s a great idea.”
Unlike their first ceremony, however, the source asserts that this time they want the event to be more muted. The pair “want to keep their special day as private as possible, so only their closest family and friends will be invited,” they said. “It’s going to be very low-key and very romantic.”
As to where it will be taking place, the insider claims to know this, too. “They’re secretly organizing an intimate beach ceremony for this winter in Hawaii, where Nicole was born,” they said.
The couple’s touching plan to renew their vows would certainly reaffirm their love for one another. And after years of rumors, it may also offer the perfect opportunity to quash any further tabloid speculation. Symbolically, too, the couple would appear to be leaving behind the problems of the past and moving forward into greener pastures.
Together, though, they’ve empowered each other ever since they first met. Kidman told Vanity Fair in 2007, “I think we were two lonely people. I would probably say that two very lonely people managed to meet at a time when they could open themselves to each other. We were a mixture of frightened and brave.”
But perhaps Urban put it best in his 2007 interview for People magazine. “She said early on that she wanted to be brave with me,” he stated. “I feel there was something else at work, bringing us together and then just continuing to watch over us.” Whatever it is, long may it continue to watch over them.
