Chad McDevitt and his girlfriend Lauren had just welcomed a baby girl. That adorable newborn was tucked up tight, securely swaddled by the hospital’s nurses. But this didn’t stop her mom from undoing the blanket to look at her baby. And that’s when Lauren found a stunning surprise: a message hidden beneath the layers.
The mom of two hadn’t been this shocked when her son Kaden had arrived! Now, though, she had to deal with the contents of the message – mere hours after giving birth to daughter Everly. And she was in front of her nearest and dearest, too. Lauren and Chad’s loved ones had all gathered in the hospital room in Taylor Mill, Kentucky, to meet the newborn.
As Lauren’s aunt enjoyed her turn to cradle Everly, though, she realized that the baby needed a little attention from her parents. Basically, she had soiled her diaper. So, the aunt gave Everly over to Chad, who gave her a kiss before passing her on to Lauren.
And as the new mom got a hold of her daughter, she couldn’t help but admire how well the nurses had taken care of her baby. “I swear, my swaddles, I could never get them this tight,” Lauren said in a video posted to YouTube by Chad in November 2014.
A voice responded off camera, saying, “Takes a lot of practice.” To this, Lauren immediately replied, “I’m not good at swaddling.” But the next request she received would have her undoing the very handiwork she was praising.
You see, another person speaking off camera said, “Let’s see her. I want to see her.” No, she wasn’t asking Lauren to simply hold up Everly or turn her toward her family members. She wanted to see the baby without her blanket.
“Open her up, because I haven’t really… they had her all swaddled up in there, I didn’t really get to see her,” the voice went on. Another family member seemed to concur, saying, “Open her up!” Did they know that there was a secret message inside for Lauren?
But Lauren was seemingly none the wiser, and so she just began to untuck her baby. She pulled the top corner of the blanket across the baby’s body to open it up on the right. Then she released the blanket’s left corner from Everly’s right side. That should have done the trick.
As Lauren took her baby out of the layers, though, she saw something that no one else in the room could. “Oooh!” she shouted as she looked down at Everly. It appeared that the newborn’s onesie had a message written on it. And as Lauren read those words, she was left truly shocked.
Then Lauren looked at Chad and asked him, “Is this for real?” And her boyfriend didn’t even have time to react before she replied for him. The ecstatic mom cried out, “Oh my god, yes. Yes, yes I will!” At this point, she hadn’t even revealed what the message said.
Chad simply responded by reaching over to take something out of the newborn baby’s hands. He didn’t read aloud the message on his daughter’s onesie, nor did Lauren. But what Everly held would tell everyone what he was going to say next.
The little baby’s father had an engagement ring in his hand. Yep, he was about to propose to Lauren! “Will you marry me?” he asked. Once again, Lauren responded, “Yes.” And, adorably, the pair sealed the deal with a kiss.
Then Chad slid the ring onto Lauren’s finger. That’s even though, as Lauren admitted, she was still “really swollen” post-childbirth. But there was still something else that had to be revealed. “Show us [Everly’s] outfit,” someone in the room requested.
Lauren complied, and she gently lifted Everly up so everyone could see the onesie she had on. “What does it say?” asked another person off camera. And Lauren read the lovely message out loud. Printed on the garment were the words “Mommy, will you marry Daddy?”
Chad and baby Everly weren’t the only ones in on the surprise, though. He had also recruited Lauren’s cousin to help him come up with a way to propose to his girlfriend, so they had known what was coming. The other family members in the room had been told, too, as had Lauren’s nurses.
And soon the whole world was let in on the sweet moment when Chad put the video of the proposal on YouTube. Since being uploaded in November 2014, the clip has racked up more than 1.3 million views, but not everyone was charmed. Yes, as is often the way, the couple received some backlash after sharing their story.
One YouTube commenter said, for example, “True love waits! Why didn’t she wait to get married?” And Chad’s Facebook post announcing the proposal may have had similar responses, according to another comment on the public video.
But there were plenty of viewers who came to the couple’s defense. Another of the video-sharing site’s users wrote, “Pay no attention to negative people. Enjoy that child and your love of your new wife. It’s YOUR timeline, your life, your decisions. A baby is a blessing any time!”
Regardless of what the rest of the world thought, Lauren and her fiancé were clearly happy with how things turned out. “Lauren started unwrapping the blanket, and the rest is history,” Chad told Little Things in 2016. The pair got married after their sweet proposal, becoming a family of four.
And on May 13, 2018, Chad used Facebook to once again praise the woman who had said “yes” to that surprise marriage proposal. “Happy Mothers Day to the mother of my children, Lauren McDevitt, who means the world to me,” he wrote. Aww.
