João Coelho Guimarães looked a little worse for wear when he arrived at Padoo Barbearia in December 2020. Being homeless meant he had no means to tame his big, bushy beard and out-of-control locks. But the team at the Brazilian barbers knew just what to do, and by the end of his makeover, Guimarães was almost unrecognizable. Then, in an incredible turn of events, the Brazilian’s new look led to a life-changing moment that had everyone – including us – in tears.
It’s hard to tell because of all the hair, but Guimarães was 45 years old at the time of his dramatic transformation. Heartbreakingly, he’s just one of a large number of people in Brazil without a home. In Sao Paulo alone, for instance, roughly 24,000 people didn’t have a roof over their heads in the spring of 2020. That’s according to the city’s own official figures from its last headcount, anyway.
That figure is truly staggering – especially when you think that it could actually be much higher. Before Guimarães’ makeover, he’d been roaming the streets of Goiânia for quite some time. But you may have already guessed that from his disheveled appearance.
Yes, at that point, it’d been roughly three years since Guimarães had a roof over his head. And as for how he found himself in that spot, the 45-year-old’s background is a little bit of a mystery. But whatever his back story may be, one thing was for sure: his hair and beard were in need of some care!
Guimarães rocked a scraggly dark mane that rested above his shoulders. His facial hair was in a similar state, too, with the graying beard stretching as far down as his chest. Most barbers would have their hands full dealing with that much hair, but just before Christmas, one establishment took on the challenge.
We’re referring to Padoo Barbearia, of course, which we mentioned a little earlier. Guimarães knew the shop well and would pass it regularly while he strolled the streets. But he hadn’t yet got up the courage to pop his head in. That was until December 2020, when the Goiânia resident decided to drop in on the workers.
But this wasn’t just any old barber shop. Padoo offers so much more than a haircut. That’s right: the business operates as a stylish clothing store, too, with racks of jeans and shirts dotted around the space. So if you’re looking to undergo a full makeover, this seems like the perfect place!
With Padoo’s emphasis on personal grooming and fashion, it’s hardly surprising that the business has quite a social media following. To give you an idea of the numbers, the versatile store boasts more than 10,000 fans on Instagram alone. Impressive, right? But the staff who work there still seem pretty down to earth, and Guimarães’ arrival revealed just how generous they really are.
How so? Well, to explain more, the proprietor of Padoo spoke to Universo Online. His name is Alessandro Lobo, and he doesn’t just run the barbers. In fact, he’s a country music artist, too. What a range of talents! During his chat with the site, Lobo recalled the moment Guimarães first walked in.
Lobo said, “[Guimarães] came, and we asked him if he was hungry and if he wanted something to eat. But he refused and asked if we had a razor so he could trim his beard. That’s when we had the idea, and everyone who was at the store decided to help him in a different way, providing him with a day of beauty.”
And what a day it proved to be! But before we get into Guimarães’ jaw-dropping transformation, Lobo revealed more about the team’s connection with the 45-year-old. This wasn’t the first time they’d crossed paths, you see.
“We decided to help [Guimarães] because we saw the extreme need he had,” Lobo told Bored Panda. “We made friends with him over the past two months. And when he asked us for a razor, we welcomed him and gave him the full experience.” The owner also touched upon how Padoo’s role in the community has changed in recent times.
“We have some social aid projects, and for us, it is very gratifying to be able to help people, whoever they are,” Lobo continued. “In this time of the pandemic, many people lost loved ones, and others were left with financial difficulties. A little help is always welcome in such a difficult time.”
Guimarães was just one of the people Padoo decided to help, and his makeover is pretty spectacular. What did it entail? Well, Lobo wasn’t exaggerating when he said the 45-year-old received the “full experience.” Yep, while the Goiânia resident was at first only interested in trimming his beard, he got far more than he bargained for…
In a video of the transformation posted on the store’s Instagram page, the barbers start off by focusing on Guimarães’ mop of hair. Specifically, they zone in on the back. With clippers in hand, the professionals begin to shave the shaggy main, leaving a tangled mound at the top. It makes for quite the visual, but their work has some way to go yet.
From here, the staff comb the longer hair away from Guimarães’ face and style it, blending it with the shorter cut around the back and sides. At this stage, the new look is really coming together. Yet one aspect of his appearance still requires a touch-up. We’re referring to his ungroomed beard, of course.
To give the professionals a better view of the wild facial fuzz, Guimarães then rests his head back against the barber’s chair. He’s looking remarkably relaxed at this stage, and we can just make out a smile forming under his beard. It must have been quite a weight of his shoulders, after all – literally and metaphorically speaking! Following a trim, the workers go on to dry his snazzy new haircut.
By the end, it’s fair to say that Guimarães looks like a different man. But his makeover didn’t end there. Alongside the haircut and styled beard, he received three new shirts from the clothing store. The homeless customer got a pair of shoes, a jacket and some pants on top of that, too.
Lobo told Bored Panda, “It took two hours to complete the transformation. The whole team volunteered, and everyone did a little, adding up to a surprising result.” And he isn’t kidding! Who could’ve predicted this outcome after only a couple of hours? It’s just further proof the guys at Padoo really know what they’re doing.
But perhaps more importantly, what did Guimarães think of the changes? Was he a fan of the new look? Well, to say that he was pleased would be a bit of an understatement. While Padoo’s visitor kept his words brief, his emotions filled in the blanks. And he started to shed tears of pure joy.
Following Guimarães’ visit, Padoo went on to share its video of the event on Instagram. The business also posted some photos on its social media page, comparing what he looked like before and after. So that should’ve been that, right? The good deed was complete. Well, not exactly. It was this online coverage that led to a somewhat life-changing moment for Guimarães.
People were so impressed by the transformation that the footage quickly went viral. Yes, the Instagram images gained thousands of likes. And since being posted in December 2020, the video has earned in excess of 66,000 views and 700 comments.
Everyone loved the makeover and went out of their way to praise Padoo’s work. One user wrote, “What a wonderful action you have done. Congratulations to everyone involved. You were awesome.” Before long, though, Guimarães’ story gained traction in other unexpected places.
Both The Sun and the Daily Mail covered the story on their respective websites in December 2020. Plus, web pages such as UNILAD and, of course, Bored Panda, also spoke of Guimarães’ transformation. How amazing is that? This heartwarming local tale is now an international sensation!
As for the reactions, Bored Panda’s coverage of the story also generated plenty of comments from online users. One said, “Those barbers are such amazing people. If only everyone could do one small act, the world would be fine.” Meanwhile, someone else echoed those sentiments in a message of their own.
The user wrote, “This is an excellent story, so never judge a book by its cover. I try to do random nice things for people when I can, and it feels good. And I can forget about the rude, mean, hurtful [ways] people I’ve known have treated me. I wish [Guimarães] all the luck and the very best.”
Here’s the thing, though. As the photos on Instagram started to take social media by storm, Guimarães’ story developed another intriguing twist. Some people from Guimarães’ past noticed the images when they went viral. And they couldn’t quite believe what – or who – they were seeing.
So who were these people? Incredibly, they were Guimarães’ mom and sister. Before seeing the photos, they believed their relative was no longer alive. Yes, you’re reading that right! And you can now imagine how shocked they must have been. The pair were convinced that their family member had passed away more than a decade ago.
Talk about experiencing a seismic shift in your life! Now, you’re no doubt wondering where this twisty tale goes next. Just think what would you do if you discovered that a long-lost relative or child was still alive and well.
Unsurprisingly, Guimarães’ mom and sister quickly contacted Lobo in the hopes that he could help them out. And the entrepreneur didn’t disappoint, managing to organize an unexpected meeting in the lead-up to Christmas. To reveal more about that special day, Lobo continued his conversation with Bored Panda.
Lobo told the website, “[Guimarães’] sister Maria Coelho came in a hurry when she saw the pictures. She lives in Brasília DF and has been waiting for ten years to hear some news about him.” From there, the Padoo chief reiterated that her family had been convinced that Guimarães was no longer alive.
So after Coelho got in touch, Padoo reached out to Guimarães and documented the magical reunion. Yes, the staff snapped pictures of the 45-year-old as he returned to the barbers on a sunny December day. He wasn’t quite as glammed up as the last time, wearing a T-shirt and shorts with a rucksack over his shoulder.
Mind you, that detail quickly faded into the background when Guimarães and Coelho finally reunited in the store’s doorway. Following a decade apart, the siblings shared a lovely embrace, unable to hide their happiness. And once again, Guimarães couldn’t hold back the tears.
And he’s not the only one. We can feel a tear or two coming on ourselves! What a beautiful moment. After they came together, Padoo then shared the images in another Instagram post, which generated an equally large response on social media. The montage of photos earned just under 23,000 views and more than 100 comments. Guimarães is obviously a celebrity in the making.
We know what you’re thinking: Guimarães could finally leave the homeless life behind, right? We hate to break it to you, but that’s sadly not what happened. Lobo shared the details with Bored Panda.
“João is still on the streets,” Lobo said. “His sister wanted to welcome him and take him home, but he didn’t want to. He said that on the streets, he feels free. That’s why he didn’t want to go home.” You didn’t see that coming, did you?
And it’s fair to say that a number of Bored Panda users were in the same boat, too. But one person took real heart from the tale, tying it back to their own situation. In the website’s comment section, they wrote, “I’m adopted and long to find my birth family. After reading this story, [I think] that someday my greatest wish could be realized.”
“Your kindness renewed my faith in the compassion still alive in today’s world,” the user then added. “[Guimarães] is a very handsome man, and I would so love to meet him one day. It is sad that he chose to return to the streets but very understandable. My heart goes out to him.”
So yes, while the conclusion is a little bittersweet, Guimarães was clearly happy enough to stay where he was. Plus, he’s now reconnected with his family. That’s life-changing in its own right – especially after a decade of uncertainty. What did Lobo think of it all, though?
“It is Christmas time, and the intention was to show that with little we can change someone’s life,” the salon owner said to Universo Online. “That we have to do good without looking at who. We did not imagine that it would have this repercussion.”
Makeovers, as Guimarães’ experience proves, are so much more than a fresh face and new hairdo. Kristil Henan was fed up with feeling plain and unstylish. All she wanted was to feel better about herself – and she knew exactly where to go: The Makeover Guy. By the end of her session, Henan was completely transformed. You won’t believe your eyes!
So what was the driving force behind Henan’s decision to see Hopkins in the first place? Well, to answer that question, she sat down to speak in one of The Makeover Guy’s online videos – known as The Power of Pretty. And during their chat, her objectives also became quite clear.
Henan tells the camera, “I’d just like to be fun. I’d like to look fun, happy and glowing. And it’s time.” She then touches upon her daughter’s role in getting her into The Makeover Guy’s famed salon. The parent adds, “‘Mother [and] daughter makeover,’ she said. ‘Let’s do it, Mom!’”
Now that we know Henan’s motives, let’s take a closer look at her appearance before Hopkins pulled out his gear. As you can see, she sported long hair that hung over her shoulders, with a light gray shade to it. In her mind, the color obviously didn’t give her the “glow” that she wanted!
On top of that, Henan’s face had a reddish tone as well, which was only magnified by the color of her locks. So without wishing to sound unkind, she seemed like the perfect candidate for The Makeover Guy to get his hands on. And as we’ve already hinted, Hopkins produced some remarkable results.
It was yet another example of Hopkins’ unmistakable talent, but how did he build up his reputation as The Makeover Guy? Has he been around for long? To answer that second question, the stylist is entering his fourth decade in the business, after launching his own salon in the 1990s.
The studio can be found in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Hopkins works on sprucing up his female customers. And as he continued to earn success, the beauty expert decided to relocate to the “uptown” area of the city. He changed the name of the salon as well, going for something a little more glamorous.
Yes, Hopkins rechristened the studio as “Revamp Salonspa.” Given his output, you could never say that the new name was misleading! But the veteran stylist is particularly adept at working with clientele above a certain age. Specifically, he helps plenty of ladies who are 45 and older at the salon.
Then again, Hopkins’ talents aren’t just restricted within the walls of his salon. For instance, once he got going in the 1990s, The Makeover Guy made some appearances on Oprah Winfrey’s famous chat show. Due to that, people across the United States caught a glimpse of his work on the small screen.
One such appearance came back in 1996, as Hopkins transformed the look of several women on the show. From their clothes to their hair, the ladies were completely different after seeing him. But The Makeover Guy didn’t stop there: he wasn’t afraid of sharing some strong opinions on camera either.
Hopkins was particularly passionate while talking about certain stylistic combinations. He told Oprah and the audience, “White pumps with tanned pantyhose – just don’t do it! In fact, throw your white pumps out. Why white pumps? No! [And] another thing. White hose. Now if you’ve got fat legs, do not wear white hose.”
“If [white hose] are in, that’s okay,” Hopkins continued. “If you’re a tall thin model, fine. But white hose do not look good on most people’s legs. Go neutral, go darker.” Surprisingly, though, that didn’t signal the end of The Makeover Guy’s animated thoughts on the subject. We said he was passionate!
Hopkins added, “I go on about the white hose, but the worst [is a combination of] black dress, white hose, black shoes. [Or] red dress, white hose, black shoes. Why are you cutting yourself up? It makes you look short and fat! [And] if it jiggles, put on some support. That’s why there are foundation garments, there’s great girdles out there.”
Some three years after that, Hopkins made another memorable appearance on Oprah’s show in 1999. On that occasion, he transformed the looks of a few more women and drew praise from one of the guests. Yes, the sharp-tongued Joan Rivers was clearly impressed with his work. That’s quite an achievement!
Hopkins also brought his mom along for that particular episode, as he highlighted a method to tackle thinning hair. Using a specialized pencil with a “matte” finish, he got to work on her locks in front of the audience. But when Oprah started to wrap things up, The Makeover Guy shared an important message.
You see, after Oprah had plugged Hopkins’ studio in Minneapolis, she asked him, “How do you help the women hold on to [their new looks]?” In response, The Makeover Guy said, “Life is maintenance. And I tell them, ‘You’ve got to maintain it. You can do it once, but it’s a daily thing.’”
Meanwhile, Hopkins’ work has been such a big hit that he now operates an additional studio. That one’s called “MakeOverGuy Minneapolis.” His fans are spoiled for choice! Mind you, he isn’t just a successful business owner. For instance, did you know that The Makeover Guy’s taken YouTube by storm too?
Yes, Hopkins put a channel together back in September 2007, showcasing his talents to the online world. And thanks to his entertaining videos, he’s earned just under 350,000 subscribers over the past decade. As for the actual posts, they’ve picked up nearly 215 million views on YouTube. That’s a staggering figure!
But Hopkins isn’t just connecting to his online fans via YouTube. In fact, he’s got his own Amazon page that lists plenty of recommended products. The items are split across four different categories, starting with “thick or curly hair” and “thinning hair.” Then the last two are “makeup” and “complete comeback countdown.”
The latter category is particularly broad, covering a range of items for both men and women. So you’ll find products such as beard shapers, wax strips, razors, and irons on that page. The hair listings are just as varied, with numerous shampoos, creams, rollers, and brushes to choose from. And that’s not all.
Alongside those hair products, Hopkins also included a link to a book he wrote in 2008. The publication is titled Staging Your Comeback: A Complete Beauty Revival for Women Over 45. It’s earned some very good reviews on Amazon too, with more than 80 percent of buyers giving it five stars.
On that note, it’s fair to say that you shouldn’t struggle to find something to aid your needs from that list. Yet for certain women, recommended products might not be enough to turn their appearances around. If that’s the case, Hopkins’ famed studio could be just the ticket to fixing them up.
So that brings us back to Kristil Henan’s trip to the salon in 2015. As we discovered earlier, she wanted to make some big changes to her hair – but her desires didn’t end there. You see, Henan had some intriguing plans for those locks once Hopkins was done with her.
To explain more, Henan opened up while speaking to The Power of Pretty. As she holds on to a lengthy lock of gray hair, she says, “I would like to donate this if I can, if it’s long enough!” Yes, you’re reading that correctly. You can send hair donations to certain organizations to help those who’ve lost their locks.
For example, places such as Hair We Share and Pink Heart Funds welcome donated locks. Those strands will then be used to create wigs for people that are suffering from medical ailments such as alopecia or cancer. It’s a lovely gesture, and that no doubt inspired Henan to reach her decision.
So what happened from there? Well, after Henan outlined her hopes at the start of The Power of Pretty video, we got a glimpse of her transformation at Hopkins’ salon. Yes, the clip immediately transitions to a shot of The Makeover Guy standing over her, holding on to a handful of hair.
Specifically, a section of Henan’s mane has been tied up into a ponytail at the back of her head. And as Hopkins keeps hold of it, he says, “We could just cut your hair off like, I dunno – let’s do this!” At this point, The Makeover Guy trims the entire thing with a pair of scissors, much to his client’s delight.
Hopkins continues, “Doesn’t that feel good people? Doesn’t that feel good?!” Henan certainly thinks so, as she responds, “Look at that! A little ponytail! Wow. Look at that. I didn’t think it was going to be that long. That really does feel good.” After this, The Makeover Guy runs his hands through her shorter locks.
“Don’t stop!” Henan says with a smile, as she encourages Hopkins to keep his hands on her head. The stylist obliges, fluffing up the back of her mane. But that doesn’t signal the end of the transformation. Off-camera, the mom’s hair was dyed a blondish shade, which replaced the light gray color.
Once that was done, the video cut back to a shot of Henan in her chair, with Hopkins adding the finishing touches. She now looks completely different, rocking a much shorter hairstyle than before. “Amazing,” she beams. “Oh my!” We get a better view of the transformation when the parent fronts up to the camera again.
Alongside Henan’s hair, she appears to be wearing a little bit of makeup as well, rounding off her new look. She says, “Oh I’m amazed. I just love it! I am wild, I feel sassy, and I’m gonna have fun [for] the rest of the day. Woo!” So Hopkins’ efforts clearly hit all the points that she had spoken about earlier.
But here’s the thing: Henan’s updated hairstyle is one of many that older women can adopt once they hit a particular age. Simply put, you don’t need to chop off your lengthier locks from 50 onwards. Edward Tricomi backed that up, as he discussed this subject on the Today website in May 2019.
Tricomi plied his trade as a “master stylist” for Warren Tricomi Salons. He informed the website, “People tend to think that just because you turn 50 you have to cut your hair very short. It doesn’t work like that. The style someone cuts their hair into all depends on the individual.”
So what can you do with your mane if you’re in that over 50 category? Well, a celebrity stylist named Nikki Kearney offered up some ideas while speaking to Today. For instance, should you have long highlighted hair, Kearney suggested that you might want to try out “loose waves” in a similar fashion to Julia Roberts.
Kearney explained, “This look can be achieved by ensuring that the hair is brightest in the front and gradually gets darker towards the back. [So] separate pieces into one to two-inch sections, and wrap each piece using a flat iron. Once the bottom section is done, repeat for the top, and then lightly run a comb through to create an effortless, loose wave throughout.”
Then again, as Tricomi mentioned before, that kind of style might not suit every woman in their 50s. If you’ve got shorter hair, loose waves won’t have the same effect! So what could you go for instead? To answer that question, another expert came forward to share their knowledge on the website.
Yes, Suki’s Salons’ James Valiant suggested that “piecey layers” might be worth looking at if you sport a shorter hairstyle. Think of it as the Helen Mirren look. Yet according to Valiant, who works with his fair share of famous faces, this choice is best for those with a specific bone structure.
Valiant told Today, “Generally speaking, this color and cut works for most women. But it would especially shine on those with more defined and angular features, as the piecey layers really soften the facial structure.” The options are certainly there for older ladies, but Henan seemed more than happy with her new look in 2015.
To sum it up, Henan shares her final thoughts at the end of The Power of Pretty video. She tells the camera, “The people were fabulous here. They were just very welcoming and very warm, and loving. Christopher was just amazing, he’s such a pleasant person to work with. Thank you so much, it was lovely.”
The video proved to be a big hit on YouTube, earning more than 5.7 million views. It generated close to 900 comments too, but a certain message really stood out. A user wrote, “This is one of the prettiest makeovers I’ve seen! This lady looks about 15 years younger, and her happy attitude is so refreshing!” We’re sure that’s music to the ears for both Henan and Hopkins.
