A good, trusting relationship with tradesmen can be hard to come by. After all, we invite them into our homes and lives so that they can use their expertise to solve our household problems, hopefully without delay or unexpected costs. So when this woman recorded a repairman in her house, she was understandably shocked at what she saw him doing in her bedroom.
This story was documented for House of Shame, which is part of newsmagazine show Inside Edition. The show is dedicated to exposing home-maintenance scammers, and in this particular episode the team were investigating some air-duct repairmen.
Of course, air-conditioning systems are susceptible to all kinds of malfunctions. Among the most common problem, though, is the build-up of dust, mold or other debris over time. In these cases, a simple clean is the only necessary fix.
First things first, then, the team of three House of Shame experts checked over the air ducts in this house. What did they find? That there was nothing more untoward than a build-up of dirt and that the air ducts would only require a basic clean.
The “homeowner” then invited a handful of local repairmen to check out the system so as to get their assessment of the air ducts. What the men didn’t know, of course, was that they were being secretly observed.
Indeed, the house was rigged with a host of hidden cameras in the most unlikely places, such as the microwave and the refrigerator. That said, it was the camera in the bedroom that arguably proved to be the most revealing in this investigation.
For instance, one repairman offered to clean the air ducts for the bargain price of $29. So, seemingly unable to resist such an incredible deal, the “homeowner” invited the man to look around the house. But, when he was left to his own devices, something bizarre happened.
As he checked out the house, he ventured up into the attic, apparently for a more thorough inspection. However, the repairman’s attention wasn’t on the air-duct system. In fact, he took a closer look at items stored in the attic.
Strangely, this repairman spent more time inspecting a pool cue stored in the attic than he did the actual air-duct system. In fact, his total assessment of the system involved a cursory glance with a flashlight.
Reporting back to the “homeowner,” the technician said, “The dust is already inside the system.” The owner asked, “Is it dirty right now?” He replied, “Yes, it is.” Clearly, he didn’t know that he was being watched, so he chose this moment to drop a bombshell.
Indeed, he claimed that it would cost a whopping $700 to have the system sanitized. And this came despite the fact that the show’s experts, who were observing from the basement, had earlier diagnosed nothing more than a minor dust issue.
Now, the “homeowner” revealed herself as the host of House of Shame, and the repairman suddenly started to look nervous. Doggedly, however, he stuck to his story, claiming that the blower motor needed cleaning. Brilliantly, that’s when the resident experts walked in.
The experts challenged how he knew it was dirty, and, unaware that he had been filmed, the technician insisted he had checked the blower. Indeed, it was only when he invited the expert to check the system himself that he bailed.
Interestingly, a second repairman offered a similarly attractive deal of $29. However, after taking a quick look at the system, the estimated bill started to increase dramatically. This time, though, the “homeowner” actually hired the repairman to complete the work – but with shocking consequences.
It started out normally, as the repairman seemingly prepared to get on with the job. He even dragged an industrial vacuum into the house – but he didn’t get round to turning it on. However, as he made his way into the bedroom, things would get even worse.
First of all, the technician failed to remove an air vent, merely wafting the airway with a blast of air. Watching this, the experts in the basement were baffled. After all, if there was dirt there, it would now have covered the room.
Then, as the man ventured into the attic, he administered another brief puff of air from his compressor wand and was “done.” The experts further noted that he hadn’t touched the huge vacuum he’d dragged into the house.
Downstairs, however, was a different story. That’s where the “homeowner” was, and that’s where the repairman broke out the vacuum and the brushes, putting on a display of doing a worthwhile job. He seemed to want her to believe that he’d done this throughout the whole house.
However, as the show’s host revealed herself, the technician beat a hasty retreat. Recognizing her, he remained tight lipped and couldn’t leave the scene fast enough. That’s probably, of course, because his scam had been well and truly blown.
If you’re worried about being ripped off in a similar fancy, then you could do worse than checking the advice given by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association. Still, the general lesson here is that if an offer seems to good to be true, it’s probably hot air.
However, that technician certainly isn’t the only person to have been caught out by a secret camera. It had been an ordinary day at the sheriff’s office for Tony Scherb, and as a police deputy, he often felt pressure at work. Scherb had, however, found a way to let off steam in the elevator. But when he stepped into his usual elevator on this particular day, he had no idea that someone was filming his de-stress routine.
El Paso County is in the state of Colorado. Approximately 500,000 people live in the area, and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for keeping them all safe. However, that’s not to say that its cops can’t let their hair down every now and then.
In 2016 one of the department’s longest serving officers was Deputy Tony Scherb. Over the course of his 29-year career, he’d served with the traffic unit and the transport and court departments. But now, he was about to take his retirement.
Thanks to his hard work, Scherb was a highly valued member of the sheriff’s office. In fact, many of his fellow colleagues looked up to him. “Tony earned the reputation from his peers and supervisors as being highly professional and exceptionally knowledgeable,” a post on the department’s Facebook page stated.
Around the same time Scherb was retiring, the elevators at the Sheriff’s Office had been malfunctioning. As a result, a team of technicians placed a surveillance camera in one of them to see what was going on. However, no one could have guessed what the camera would pick up.
As the camera rolled, Scherb walked into the elevator in question. Seemingly unaware that a camera was filming, he checked his phone before securing it in his pocket. At this point, there was nothing out of the ordinary about the scene.
But, at that precise moment, music began to play in the elevator. Surprisingly, the song was Silento’s 2015 hit “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)” – and things were about to become even stranger.
As the music got going, Scherb threw his arms above his head and began busting a series of extraordinary moves. He also appeared to know every single word of the song. So he convincingly lip-synced along to Silento’s rapping as he cracked out the “whip/nae nae.”
But just as Scherb was getting into the swing of things, another police officer entered the elevator. At first, Deputy Reed just looked at her colleague uneasily. However, it seemed his enthusiasm was contagious.
Because, after a little while, Reed couldn’t help but join in with the dancing. Together with Scherb, she shimmied around the elevator. Then, the pair executed one of the song’s signature moves – the “stanky leg” – like true professionals.
However, the party came to an abrupt end when the cops’ boss, Chief Deputy Evans, entered the elevator. At this point, both Scherb and Reed stood completely still, with their backs upright against the wall. Scherb even threw Evans a salute in honor of his senior rank.
But the moment that Evans stepped out of the elevator, the dancing resumed. Then, as Scherb and Reed were gyrating away, a third officer joined them, and she quickly got into the swing of things too. The three of them soon synchronized their moves as they rocked back and forth to do the “superman.”
There was still room for one more person to join the action, though. And that’s when Sheriff Bill Elder entered the lift. Momentarily, the three cops stopped, apparently anxious about their boss’ reaction. However, when the Sheriff busted out his own moves, the rest immediately followed suit.
The epic two-and-a-half-minute clip finished with the four cops jigging merrily together. Following the delightful skit, then, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office decided to post the clip to its Facebook page. It thought the video was a fitting tribute to Scherb’s dedication to public service.
But no one expected the clip to go viral. Still, since the sheriff’s office posted the clip on social media in January 2016, seven million people have viewed it. Many praised the cops involved for showing a more human side to law enforcement too.
“I’ve watched this about 30 times and it is absolutely hilarious,” one viewer wrote on Facebook in 2016. “It is nice to see officers having fun as their jobs are so stressful. I worked for a Sheriff’s Dept. in WV for many years and we never had a sheriff that enjoyed cutting up a little with his employees.”
“We just thought, ‘Hey, let’s do something fun to celebrate his retirement,’” Jacqueline Kirby, media relations manager from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, told Today in 2016. “In the end, the response was way more overwhelming than we thought it’d be, especially for a law enforcement agency.”
And the video certainly had the intended effect. “What we hope people see is that even though officers serve and protect as their main duty, they are human,” Kirby explained. “They can have fun. And that’s what we did.”
And it seems that Deputy Scherb was in on the joke the entire time. “Tony is probably one of the most hilarious, nicest deputies I’ve ever met,” Kirby revealed. “He’s had a stellar, stellar career and he’s going to be greatly missed. Just a quality person and a quality deputy.”
Following his famous elevator antics, Scherb retired. It’s safe to say, then, that his big personality will be missed all around the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office. However, while he may now be gone, thanks to his whip/nae nae, he certainly won’t be forgotten.
